It was past midnight by the time Ori made it back to the apartment. He found Senna in her room, standing over a map of the wastes projected from four devices she’d set up along the floor. Pins dotted the hologram, connecting at various points like a web of translucent light. As Ori entered, Senna spun on her heel, arms crossed tight over her chest.

“Took you long enough,” she said dryly. “Though I was gonna have to wait all night for you.”

“Guess I should’ve taken longer.” Ori matched her tone. He gestured at the map. “You said you found a rift hoard?”

Senna smirked, then turned to the projection. “Told you I would, didn’t I?”

“How? It’s not like hoards are exactly easy to track down.”

“Thorne doesn’t seem to think so.” Senna walked around the projection and leaned against the wall, nudging her shield aside with her foot. “Lucky for you though, I’m here. And as it turns out, my contact was quite useful. Introduced me to a bunch of big shot scavengers who regaled me with tales about their adventures.”

“And that led you to a hoard? Seems like a pretty big leap.”

Senna rolled her eyes. “Of course it didn’t. But someone had to pick up your slack while you were gallivanting around the wastes with Esker, so I went around town chatting up the locals. Tracked down every scavenger who’d uncovered a rift hoard in the past and got the coordinates out of them. Then I compiled it all into this map.”

She clicked on a remote and all the pins on the projection lit up, each labeled by a set of coordinates. They stretched across the wastes like points on a graph. Dozens of hoards littered the northern region of the wastes close to Dusthallow, all of them looted decades ago by the region’s first scavengers. As the map stretched deeper into the wastes, the amount of hoards dwindled, but still some had been found, including the one below Polaris’ mining depot and the one at the center of the Yawning Dunes.

“Not bad, huh?” Senna said. “The wastes don’t seem quite so empty when you look at it this way, wouldn’t you say?”

“There’s a lot more of them out there than I thought.” Ori squinted at the map. “Doubt it’s common knowledge. How’d you get them to tell you?”

“Come on, you think a scavenger wouldn’t brag about finding a rift hoard, especially to a cute girl hanging off their every word?” Senna twirled the remote in her fingers. “All I had to do was show a little skin and they were already climbing all over each other to tell me.”

Ori bit his lip as the image of Senna came to his mind, dress glittering as she sat under the low light of a bar, body strategically positioned to offer hints of bare skin, all while she fed her target alcohol and honeyed words. Somehow, the thought left a knot in his stomach.

“I bet.” He pushed the feeling away and faced the projection.
